Phillip Island is a great place to go for a holiday or a day trip out of the city. With so many different activities to be enjoyed on the island, couples, families and adventure seekers alike flock to the area each year for some R&R. From day tours to see the penguin parade to bush walk and cycling tracks, we've got a great list of the best activities the island has to offer:
Phillip Island Nature Park-Koala Conservation Centre
Visit the conservation centre to witness some of Australia's greatest treasures living in their natural habitats. Like nothing you'll see at a zoo, the centre allows you to get up close with the koala's in their natural environment. Walking amongst the treetops and along walking tracks you might see echidnas, wallabies and other Native Australian Wildlife including 80 species of birds. This is certainly an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family!
Churchill Island is located just off the coast of Phillip Island. It's a great place to visit with a number of walking tracks, cottages and beautiful gardens to explore. The island was the site of the first European agricultural pursuit in the state and offers visitors a number of fun activities to be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.
Swimming and surfing
Phillip Island has over 100 kilometres of coastline, most of which is suitable for a number of fun activities in the water. The northern beaches are great for families as they mostly have very safe conditions. During the summer holidays, the main beaches are patrolled by life guards. For those looking to catch a wave, the island has a number of beaches which produce great surf anytime. Smiths Beach and Woolamai are two of the islands surf beaches. Note also that they are the two beaches where the strongest rips have been known to occur.
For those who don't know how to surf but have always wanted to learn, why not take a class or two with one of the islands surf schools?
Get close to the island's penguins
The colony of Little Penguins that inhabit the island is one of the biggest in the world. At sunset they come ashore and head to their burrows. This 'penguin parade' as it is referred to is a must see when visiting the island. A great way to experience this phenomena is to take a Phillip Island tour with a guide who can tell you all about the life of the little penguins as they waddle up the sand from the water.
From cycle and walking tracks to close encounters with native animals, Phillip Island has a number of great activities to offer visitors. I hope our pick of some of the best things to see and do while on the island has given you some inspiration for what you and your family can enjoy while on your island escape.
