Finding a holiday to please the entire family can be something of a balancing act at times, but fun for the parents and fun for the children don't need to be mutually exclusive concepts. With a bit of planning and preparation, it's possible to find the perfect holiday destination for everyone, whether it's a Blue Mountains tour that takes in some scenery, some shopping and some adventure, or a seaside cottage with enough sun surf and sand to keep everyone busy. We've put together three holiday spots that are perfect for family fun without being too kid-centric. Enjoy!
Set on the idyllic Gold Coast, Surfer's Paradise truly has something for everything. The beach and sunny weather make for plenty of lazy days enjoying the white sand beach, but there is also a huge tourist industry that supports fun away from the waves as well. For kids there are a whole host of nearby theme parks including Seaworld, Dreamworld, Movie World and Wet 'n Wild, and for parents there are great restaurants, shopping, cafes and bars. There are also a range of shows at the nearby Jupiters Casino, and with gorgeous hinterland a mere half-hour's drive away, you can get out of the hustle and bustle and explore the countryside as well.
For a holiday with an exotic feel, Darwin is the perfect base for your Top End adventures. Over the past few decades Darwin has really come into its own, with a thriving and unique culture that separates it from Australia's other capital cities. Its tropical climate is guaranteed to put everyone in the holiday mood, but its proximity to Kakadu National Park and other Top End wonders means that there are adventures that the whole family can partake in. Take a crocodile boat tour or go camping in the bush, or take a fishing charter to try your hand at catching Barramundi. Darwin itself boasts a lively boardwalk filled with food stalls and restaurants, and the Mindil Beach Markets are a must-see.
For a holiday with more of a wildlife focus, Phillip Island is a great option. Set a few hours outside of Melbourne, this is one of the best places in the world to get up close and personal with a colony of Little Penguins, and watch as they move ashore in their thousands during the well-known Little Penguin Parade. Once you've had enough penguin-watching, there's a thriving food and wine scene to explore, beautiful scenery for those kodak moments and don't forget A Maze 'n Things, a kid's adventure centre filled with optical illusions and mazes. We recommend booking a Phillip Island tour to get your bearings first, then enjoying all this incredible destination has to offer.
